Grand Teton National Park, June 21-28, 1996

The drive out to Wyoming was beautiful and a great experience, well worth the two days. I'd highly recommend it to anyone. Be sure to stop in the Badlands, and go see Devils tower.

On our first day in Jackson, we took a snow climbing school from Teton Mountain Guides. This was definitely a good idea and a great confidence builder. It really made me feel more comfortable hiking in the mountains on my own.

It turned out that this spring was one of the snowiest in the Tetons in recent memory, with snow levels in the mountains 50% higher than normal. Of course it decided to warm up and rain when Matt and I got out there, which made avalanche danger very high. We must be getting old, because we decided not to take any chances with avalanches. We did climb up a few thousand feet into Hanging Canyon for a day, but didn't end up camping in the mountains at all. Once again screwed by bad weather, but that seems to be my luck lately.
